Paradis d'enfer
A la manière des écrivains et des cinéastes de science fiction, Isabelle Souriment suscite une réflexion critique sur le monde actuel en créant des images poétiques et drôles d’un futur imaginaire, où des animaux sauvages de contrées lointaines (Tropiques, pôles…) peuplent des paysages de zones tempérées (France, Grande-Bretagne, etc.).
Ces manipulations virtuelles que l’artiste fait subir aux images font écho à celles qui sont infligées dans la réalité aux animaux - par l’élevage industriel, la recherche génétique, le clonage – et qui ont définitivement transformé nos conditions de vie. Ne peut-on avancer l’hypothèse que la nature et l’animal nous questionnent parce que leur statut les situe désormais au plus proche d’un réel que nous transformons, des espèces sauvages que nous réintroduisons dans un milieu surveillé, où le naturel ne peut survivre qu’enclos?
De ces tableaux émane paradoxalement une ambiance paradisiaque. On sait que le mot paradis vient du persan par le grec paradeisos, qui signifie "parc clos où se trouvent des animaux sauvages".
« Par le montage photographique, j’ai voulu représenter cet état de la nature, jamais intacte ni indépendante de l'homme. En déplaçant des animaux dans un paysage autre que le leur, je soulève un paradoxe entre l’idée romantique de la nature et la réalité de notre monde moderne submergé, d’informations et de technologies à travers lequel nous souhaitons retrouver nos relations conscientes avec la nature des choses et des êtres, telle une renaissance.»
« Le jardin d’Eden et la notion du "Paradis perdu" m’ont toujours fascinée. J’ai réalisé quelques travaux sur ce sujet, dont l’installation "I like to think so", (J’aimerais bien y croire). Un nouvel Eden, une transgression amusée et revisitée à partir des signes induits de nos mutations contemporaines. Puis, je me suis dirigée vers des "faux-semblants de Paradis faits main", où j’ai utilisé des animaux en plastique que j’ai découpés, ré-assemblés et photographiés. Une fantaisie d’apprenti généticien donne naissance à ce nouveau bestiaire. Entre réalité et fiction, entre maquette et réalité, entre faux-semblant et vrai-semblable, j’entre en jeu avec ce qui m’entoure. Je crée une vision d’un monde hybride, fabriqué et inspiré par une notion allégorique du Paradis, "créé par la main de l’Homme" ».

In the manner of writers and filmmakers of science fiction, Isabelle Souriment raises a critical reflection on today's world by creating funny and poetic images of an imaginary future, where wild animals from distant lands (the tropics, poles ...) populate landscapes of the temperate zones (France, Great Britain, etc.)..
These virtual manipulations to which the artist has subjected the images echo those imposed on real animals - factory farming, genetic research, cloning - which have definitively changed our lives. Can we not therefore advance the hypothesis that nature and animals are now questioning us because their status is now closer to a manipulated reality?
“By juxtaposing the animals in a landscape other than their own, I seek to question these paradoxes - between the romantic idea of nature and reality, or even more so, between «natural» and «artificial». My work attempts to understand the malaise born out of an impotence of ethics as we deal with technological change. I am contrasting my fictional mutations - less dangerous and I hope more poetic "
Paradoxically an atmosphere of paradise emanates from these pictures. And indeed the word paradise comes from the Persian by way of the Greek paradeisos, meaning "enclosed park where wild animals can be found."
“The Garden of Eden and the concept of ‘Paradise Lost’ has always fascinated me. I have done some work on this subject, including the installation ‘I like to think so’; A new Eden, a fun transgression revisited and inspired by signs influenced by our contemporary mutations. This led to "False pretences of Paradise made by hand", where I used animals in plastic that I cut, re-assembled and photographed. A fantasy apprentice geneticist giving birth to a new bestiary. Between reality and fiction, between model and reality, between seeming-false and seeming-truth, I enter into this game with what surrounds me. Creating a vision of a hybrid world, produced and inspired by an allegorical concept of Paradise, ‘created by the hand of man’"
